Learning to read is a very important part of a child's life, not to mention an opportunity to bond with your grandchild as well. Regardless of how old a child is they will enjoy being read to. You can also offer to have them to read a few paragraphs out loud as well.
There are many different reading opportunities available at any age. One way to keep children interested in reading is to plan a regular visit to the local library and have them help pick out a book that you can read together. Many times a book may be too difficult for them to read by themselves, but if you are going to read it together that makes all the difference in the world. When reading to a child, have fun with the story and make it come to life with your voice and actions. You may even want to familiarize yourself with the book beforehand.
In order to know whether or not a book is in a child's reading level, many schools present their students with a tool called a "Lexile Measure". This Lexile measure is a number that allows students and adults to choose a book that is within their reading skill level. You can visit a website called www.lexile.com to learn more about this very helpful reading tool. Once a child has a Lexile score, you can look up all the books on their website to find out what the Lexile score is for each individual book.
